What is Right for You?

Total Hip Replacement
Hip Resurfacing

Hip Resurfacing is bone conserving and allows a patient to return to an active life with no restrictions. Hip Resurfacing is often used for young male athletes who want to return to the sports they love.

  • Hip Resurfacing is bone conserving. Less of the femur ball is removed than a THR
  • Hip Resurfacing allows a patient to have an active life with no restrictions after recovery
  • Hip Resurfacing patients return to the sports and activities they love
  • Hip Resurfacing patients return to pain free, active lives
  • Hip Resurfacing patients retain  a their normal gait since the femur cap is the same size as a persons original femur ball

Hip Resurfacing compared to Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement, THR, or total hip arthroplasty has been the gold standard for many years. THR is major surgery that can result in a long post-op recovery and can limit your activities depending on the type of hip device that is used.

  • The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal stem that is placed into the hollow center of the femur.
  • A metal or ceramic ball is placed on the upper part of the stem. This ball replaces the damaged femoral head that was removed.
  • The damaged cartilage surface of the socket (acetabulum) is removed and replaced with a metal socket.
  • A plastic, ceramic, or metal spacer is inserted between the new ball and the socket to allow for a smooth gliding surface.
