Opioid use beyond the first 3 months following total hip replacement is associated with a greater likelihood of revision surgery later for older adults. Based on a retrospective study, patients who continued opioid analgesia in the second 90-day postoperative period were more than twice as likely to require revision 1 year after their operation as those who had stopped opioid therapy by that point. At 5 years postoperatively, meanwhile, they were almost twice as likely to need revision.
