New York, NY—August 8, 2017
For the eighth consecutive year, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has been ranked the No. 1 hospital in the country for orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals 2017-2018” survey. HSS has also been recognized as a leader in rheumatology, ranking No. 3 in the nation.
“We are honored and proud that this marks the 26th consecutive year HSS has been among the top ranked hospitals for orthopedics and rheumatology,” said Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS. “With a specialized focus on musculoskeletal health, we are committed to raising the highest standards of care, quality, and value. HSS will continue to challenge the status quo in pursuit of ‘better’ to positively drive change in the health care industry.”
U.S. News evaluates more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 146 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
“Our patient-centered clinical staff works together seamlessly from diagnosis to surgery, and if needed, to rehabilitation,” said Todd J. Albert, M.D., surgeon-in-chief and medical director of HSS. “Patients benefit from the interactions of multi-disciplinary teams who are surrounded by the latest technologies, proven process and a positive culture. The HSS ‘ecosystem’ is the reason for successful patient outcomes.”
In 2016, HSS cared for more than 131,000 pediatric and adult patients (a 6 percent growth from 2015) with both surgical and non-surgical needs such as joint pain, trauma and sports injuries, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain and spinal disorders, and conditions of the hand and upper extremity, and foot and ankle.
“HSS rheumatologists work hand-in-hand with our scientists to discover new therapies, further advancing the field of autoimmune diseases,” said Mary K. Crow, MD, physician-in-chief and chief of Division of Rheumatology. “As rheumatic diseases tend to be chronic, patients who come to HSS benefit from developing long-term relationships with their physician who is committed to uncovering the best and leading treatments for each individual.”
HSS also provides care to elite, professional and collegiate athletes and organizations around the world, including USA Basketball, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), UFC, the Brooklyn Nets, New York Giants, New York Knicks, New York Liberty, New York Mets and New York Red Bulls, among others.
