I had mine done by Mr McMinn at the ROH in Birmingham when the procedure was a twinkle in most peoples eyes. I had CDH which was only diagnosed at 4yrs so I had many ops to try to ‘build’ a hip socket but it finally gave up the ghost and I was faced with either a non tried and tested new op or a THR. I had to have bone grafting at the same time so my post op recovery took longer than normal. I was in traction for 4 weeks & crutches for a few months but it meant I could walk down the isle in 1992 with no …

Total Hip Replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint, which is diseased or injured, and replaces it with an artificial joint made from metal and plastic components or ceramic components. It usually is done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief. The procedure should relieve a painful hip joint, making walking easier.
There are many options a surgeon can use for the type of device that is right for you. Often the newer ceramic total hip replacement devices are used. They have a larger ball size than the old traditional small ball total hip replacement devices. The older small ball devices usually have more restrictions about what activities a patients can do since it is more likely to have a dislocation.
The older metal on metal large ball device used more recently are no longer used. Their

There are currently two basic surgery options available for hip replacement – Hip Resurfacing or Total Hip Replacement. Hip Resurfacing is bone conserving and allows a patient to return to an active life with no restrictions. Hip Resurfacing is often used for young male athletes who want to return to the sports they love.
A total hip replacement, THR, has been the gold standard for many years. THR is major surgery that can result in a long post-op recovery and often limits your activities depending on the type of hip device that is used.

What is direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery?
Direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery is a minimally invasive form of total hip replacement that offers benefits which include less pain and faster recovery following surgery. Like traditional total hip replacement, the anterior approach is designed to achieve the same functional result – to restore the hip joint by implanting artificial components. However, the technique used with the direct anterior approach is significantly less invasive. During the procedure, your surgeon will use specialized techniques in order to cause the least amount of trauma possible to the muscles and tissues surrounding the joint.
What is the difference between direct anterior hip replacement and traditional hip replacement?
In traditional hip replacement surgery, the procedure is performed through a large incision along the side or back of the hip, and it involves cutting through or detaching muscles and tissues around the hip joint and …
