Does Anyone Else Feel Tired?
« on: February 16, 2010, 06:08:44 PM »
I am scheduled for THR - anterior method, in early April.  I have had this problem for more than a year and a half - fortunately, it is not terribly painful - just in transitioning from one position to another and the pain lasts only seconds - that is very manageable.  But it is getting harder and harder to walk.  It just feels like my hip is locked up.  I have been conscious of every step I have taken since things started getting bad.  Now I find that I am so exhausted from the effort of walking even short distances?  At least I think it is from the effort of walking - I am trying to stay as active as possible.

Is this normal - has anyone else experienced this?

Hi

You did not say what is wrong with your hip or your age - but if you have arthritis, that causes fatigue.  Trying to make your body walk and work properly when you have a bad hip takes a lot of effort and that definitely can make your tired.  The less you walk and move - the more you get out of good physical shape.  That contributes to your fatigue.

Hopefully, after you get a new hip, you will be up and moving without pain again.  You will also be tired after surgery.  It takes your body about 6 months to mostly heal and 1 year to completely heal.  Many people have a diffiuclt time getting their energy back after surgery for 6 weeks, to 3 or 4 months to 6 months or more.  Each person heal at their own rate and returns to a normal life at their own rate.  So you may still be tired for awhile after your surgery.

Thanks Pat - I am having a THR due to osteo arthritis.  I try to still keep active and walk as much as I can, but like I said, the effort leaves me feeling tired.  I am hoping that after recovery, I can resume my more serious walking - I miss exercising so much.  Soon.  thanks again.

Hi, Yes!!!!   Hope it isn't too late to reply to you!
I had a similar experience and found that the hip kind of dragged my energy out.
I had to wait a long time for an appt., so asked to go to PT for awhile
in order to see how I could preserve what strength I had and whatever
else info the PT could offer.
Mine advised me to get a walking aid a.s.a.p. and then taught me to use it
safely.  It made a big difference in my ability to stay on my feet while I was waiting.

I am two weeks out of THR and am doing wonderfully well!
It's nice to feel on the other side of all this stuff.

Sending you positive thoughts!    :)

Hi Suzy - congrats on getting your surgery behind you.  Did you have traditional THR or anterior?  I am starting to count down the days to my surgery and am beginning to get a little bit apprehensive.

Tell me more about your progress.  thanks.  Carol

Hi Carol

Everyone gets a bit nervous before surgery.  The waiting is the most diffiuclt.  Just concentrate on the positive aspects about how great it will be to be out of pain and active this summer.

You will soon be there.

Hi Carol and Pat, and thank you so much for responding to my post!
Three weeks ago today I had my THR!!!
What an amazing process this has been!
Pat might have to explain this more to us, but my surgeon got to my hip
via sort of a "back door" or posterior approach.  I think.
My scars are sort of on the back of my right hip.
I have had recovery beyond my wildest dreams!
I have no soreness now in my thigh at all and have a list of exercises to do
when I can.
Twice a week a home nurse comes and does blood work and vitals,
and a physical therapist comes to the house.
They encourage me to move within limits and observe the hip precautions.
The home services enabled me to leave the rehab place in a week.
The rehab was outstanding!  There were a few other "hip" and several "knee people" there.  There was lots of time in physical therapy which sped things along for me!
The home services will be done at the end of March I understand.
I am still using my left forearm crutch minimally.

I am sending you lots of positive thoughts and confidence!
The professionals take SUCH good care of us!
I look forward to hearing more about how you are doing!!!
take care!  -suzy
